Etymology of Allium:
La. garlic, used by Pliny the Elder. All was also Celtic for hot, pungent or burning, referring to the taste or the effect upon the eyes. The genus also includes various edible onions, chives, and leeks.

From the Latin in- = 'not' and odorum = 'smelly' or 'fragrant'
