Etymology of Andropogon:
Gk. andros = a man, male; pogon = beard, hence ‘bearded male’; alluding to the awns or to the long hairs on the raceme internodes and pedicels of sterile and male-only spikelets.
Etymology of mannii:
Named after Gustav Mann (1835-1916) horticulturist who joined Kew in 1859, collected in West Africa and worked as a forestor in India
