From aspalathos, a scented bush that grew in Greece, now in the related genus Astragalus.
Etymology of suaveolens:
From the Latin ‘suave’ / ‘suave’ meaning ‘pleasantly’; and the Latin ‘olens’ / ‘olens’ meaning ‘smelling’.
Slender, sprawling shrublet 20 cm. Leaves 3-foliolate, leaflets linear-oblanceolate, ciliate. Flowers in terminal heads, yellow, keel glabrous, calyx sparsely hairy, lower lobe enlarged. Nov.--Jan. Mountain fynbos, 700--1250 m, NW (Grootwinterhoek Mts).
