Etymology of Blighia:
For William Bligh (1754–1817), British mariner, navigator and colonial governor. He joined the navy in 1770, was appointed master on Resolution on James Cook’s third voyage (1776–1780), saw action against France in 1780–1783 and was promoted to lieutenant, became commander of HMS Bounty (1787) during which the crew mutinied and set Bligh and 18 others adrift in an open boat seven metres long. He skilfully navigated 3 618 miles (5 822 km) to Timor in 47 days. In 1791 the Admiralty appointed him a captain, later rearadmiral then vice admiral (1814). He received a gold medal from the Royal Society of Arts (1793) and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (1801). Fifteen years after the Bounty mutiny he was appointed governor of New South Wales in Australia.
