Etymology of Blumea:
For Karl Ludwig von Blume (Karel Lodewijk Blume) (1796–1862), German botanist, studied medicine at Leiden University and went to Java to study native medicines (plants) in 1817. He became director of the Buitenzorg Botanical Gardens, now Bogor (1722), returned to The Netherlands in 1726 for health reasons and became director of the state herbarium at Leiden. He authored, inter alia, the four-volume Rumphia (1835–1848), in line with the Linnaean classification system, and Flora Javae nec non Insularum Adjacentium (1829), considered among the finest works among the literature of the Old World orchids. He was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1855.
