Etymology of Bryonia:
Gk. bryo = to grow rapidly; bryon = oyster-green. Bryon normally means moss, but bryro can mean ‘luxuriant growth’ as would be the case in leafy hedgerows, a use to which the species B. dioica is put.

From the Latin cordatus = ‘heart-shaped’; usually referring to the leaf shape
