Short etymology:
Named for the Holy Roman Emperor Carolus Magnus, otherwise known as Charlemagne (742–814). The preface to the Codex Epistolaris Carolinus states that the sick soldiers in King Charlemagne’s army, suffering from the plague, were cured by a species of ‘carline thistle’, Carlina acaulis.
