Etymology of Clerodendrum:
Gk. kleros = chance or fate; dendron = tree. The Ceylonese ‘chance-tree’; alludes to a native legend that the trees possessed medicinal properties, and also to the uncertainty of the medicinal properties of the different species.
Etymology of transvaalense:
From the former Transvaal Province of South Africa; now Gauteng Province. Trans meaning 'across', and vaal refers to the Vaal River, it being on the far side of the river from the Cape.
