For Richard Joseph Courtois (1806–1835), Belgian physician and botanist. At age five he met botanist Alexandre Louis Simone Lejeune who sparked his interest in plant collecting. He obtained his doctorate in medicine cum summa lauda in 1825 from the University of Ghent and that year was appointed deputy director of the Botanical Garden of the University of Liège at a paltry salary; so he was forced to translate German medical works to provide for his family. Between1825–1830 Lejeune and Courtois edited the Choix de plantes de la Belgique (many issues) and compiled the Compendium Florae Belgicae, 1828–1836. He was offered a botanical appointment at the University of Liège but died, probably of tuberculosis, before he could take it up.
