Etymology of Diospyros:
Gk. dios = divine; pyros = literally, a ‘grain of wheat’ but in this instance fruit. The fruits are ‘divine’ – edible and very tasty. This name was originally applied to the Caucasion persimmon, Diospyros lotus.
