Etymology of Doria:
For Andrea Doria (Dorea) (Andreas Dorias) (1468–1560), an Italian nautical pioneer, admiral, and statesman after whom many ships were named. He is credited with being the first mariner to devise a method for sailing a ship against the wind. As a statesman he was involved in many bloody wars, feuds and conspiracies. As captaingeneral of the Genoese navy from 1512 onward he fought against the French and Barbary pirates, helped Charles V capture Tunis, and saved the Holy Roman Empire from a disastrous expedition against the North African city of Algiers in 1541. He retired to a monastery at age 87, but when the French tried to annex the nearby island of Corsica he once again succeeded in leading the fleet to victory. Andrea Doria is often referred to as ‘the father of his country’.
