Etymology of Epilobium:
Gk. epi- = upon; lobion = diminutive of lobos = pod, capsule. The flower and capsule appear together, the flowers rest on the pod-like fruit, the corolla being borne on the end of the ovary.

From the Greek oligos = few, and anthos = flower; referring to the plant's comparative lack of flowers
