Etymology of Epilobium:
Gk. epi- = upon; lobion = diminutive of lobos = pod, capsule. The flower and capsule appear together, the flowers rest on the pod-like fruit, the corolla being borne on the end of the ovary.
Etymology of tetragonum:
From the Greek tetra = 'four' and gonum = 'knee', 'node' or 'joint'. May refer to nodes, joints or four-angled stems

Glabrescent perennial to 1.8 m, producing leafy basal rosettes in autumn. Leaves narrowly lanceolate, sessile, finely toothed. Flowers solitary in the upper axils, pink, stigma club-shaped. Nov.--Jan. Damp places, SW, KM, LB, SE (European weed, Cape Peninsula to Mpumalanga).
