Etymology of Ethulia:
Linnaeus gave no explanation of this name. Perhaps Gk. aithon = fiery, sparkling; oulios = baneful, destructive; referring to the purplered flowers of the first described species, E. conyzoides.

From the Latin ramosus meaning ‘branched’ or 'full of branches'. Can refer to either a branched plant or a branched inflorescence.
