Etymology of Hypochaeris:
Gk. hypo- = beneath, below; khaeris = young pig. William Henry Harvey wrote that ‘pigs eat the roots [of this plant] greedily’ (Flora Capensis).

From the Greek mikra = 'small' and kephalos = 'head'; i.e. having a small head of flowers
