Etymology of Lotus:
Gk. lotos, but of semitic origin, a name used by Theophrastus for the legendary fruit eaten by the lotophagi, which could produce a state of intoxicated relaxation, euphoria, dreaminess and forgetfulness.

Mat-forming subshrub to 30 cm. Leaves 3-foliolate, leaflets obovate-oblanceolate, thinly hairy. Flowers sub-umbellate on slender peduncles, yellow. Nov.--Mar. Marshy places, SW, LB, SE (Eurasian weed).
