Etymology of Lysimachia:
A Linnaean name after a Greek physician, Lycimachus (fourth or fifth century) or after King Lacimachos (c 360–281 BCE) of Thracia. Their names mean lysi- = loosen, dissolution; mache = strife. The plant is alleged to have medicinal, calming properties; ‘loosestrife’.
Etymology of woodii:
Named after John Medley Wood (1827-1915) farmer, trader and botanist in Kwa-Zulu Natal, curator of Durban Botanic Garden from 1882 and founder of the Natal Herbarium
