Etymology of Mikania:
For Josef (Joseph) Gottfried Mikan (1743–1814), Austrian-Czech botanist and medical professor at the University of Prague, and father of the naturalist and zoologist Johann C Mikan (1769–1844). He studied at Dresden, Prague and Vienna and started his career as a doctor before becoming associate professor (1773), professor of botany and chemistry (1775) and then rector of the University of Prague (1798). He was the author of Catalogus Plantarum Omnium (1776), which was dedicated to the Botanical Garden of Prague.
