Short etymology:
For Gert Cornelius Nel (1885–1950), South African botanist, plant collector and cactus specialist, and professor of botany at Stellenbosch University, 1921–1950. He studied in Stellenbosch before moving to Germany, where he studied chemistry and obtained a PhD from Berlin University under Adolf Engler in 1914. He had a special interest in succulent plants, especially Stapelieae, Euphorbias and Mesems. He collected extensively in the drier parts of South Africa and took responsibility for the university garden. He produced an illustrated volume on Lithops (undated) and one on Gibbaeum (1953), edited by PG Jordaan.
