Etymology of Neopatersonia:
La. neo- = new. For Florence Mary Paterson (née Hallack) (1869–1936), botanical collector. She collected in the area around Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, and was the wife of TV Paterson of South Africa. She made a comprehensive collection of specimens, some of which had not been seen since Carl (Karl) Ludwig Philipp Zeyher (1799–1858) collected in that area in 1838. She sent her specimens mainly to Selmar Schönland (1860–1940), who was professor of botany at Rhodes University and curator (later director) of the Albany Museum, who specifically thanked her in Volume 1 of his Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa (1919) as did Harry Bolus in Volume 3 of Orchids of South Africa (1913).
