Short etymology:
Brazilian petyn, petyma, from the Tupi-Guaranti language; Middle French petun = tobacco. Petunia flowers are only indirectly linked to tobacco in that they are part of the large Solanaceae family – a family that includes tomatoes, potatoes, chilli peppers, cape gooseberries, etc.
