For Neville Stuart Pillans (1884–1964), South African botanist, son of Charles Eustace Pillans (1850–1919). He studied agriculture at Cambridge University for two years but had to stop due to ill health. He joined the staff of the Bolus Herbarium in Cape Town in 1918 and became its assistant curator for many years. He had a special interest in succulents and was an authority on Stapeliads and collected plants near Clanwilliam. He assisted HHW Pearson in selecting the Kirstenbosch site for the future National Botanical Garden. He spent much time on the taxonomy of South African flora, including Restionaceae, Bruniaceae, Phylica, Agathosma and Metalasia. He was revising Hermannia but gave this up on medical advice two years before he died.
