Etymology of Polygala:
Gk. poly = much; gala = milk; so-called from the belief that cattle grazing in fields with this plant produced more milk. (San Marcos growers in the United States claim that Polygala virgata ‘Portola’ has this property but the authors could find no scientific evidence).
Etymology of schinziana:
Named after the German botanist Hans Schinz (1858-1941) who in 1884 began a two and a half year expedition in Namibia with mine manager H. Pohle. Returning to Zurich he became director of the botanic garden and an extraordinary professor at the university
