Etymology of Polystachya:
Gk. polys = many; stachys = ear of grain or spike; referring to the many branchlets which make up the inflorescence in some species and which may resemble spikes of wheat.
Etymology of kirkii:
Named after Sir John Kirk (1832-1922), a Scottish physician, naturalist, and botanist who explored and collected plants in East Africa.
