For Johann Heinrich Voss (1751–1826), German poet and translator who studied philology at the University of Göttingen in 1772. He was editor of Musenalmanach (1775), rector of the Latin school at Otterndorf (1778), rector of the gymnasium at Eutin (1782–1802), professor at the University of Heidelberg (1805–1826), and author of two volumes of poems, including his idyllic poem Luise, and papers on mythology and religious freedom. A classical scholar and linguist, his translations into German of the works of Homer’s epics (Illiad and Odessy), Virgil, Horace, Tibullis, Ovid, Theocritus, Propertius and others have received acclaim. He also translated Shakespeare’s plays, which he completed with the help of his sons, Heinrich and Abraham.
