Etymology of Warneckea:
For Otto Warnecke (f 1899–1908), German botanist and plant collector. Details are sketchy about his life, but it is believed he collected plants from the coastal area Lomé, Togo, on the west coast of Africa from 1899–1901, then worked as head gardener for the Biological-Agricultural Institute at the Amani Nature Reserve in Tanzania from 1903–1908, where he collected the type specimen of the fern W. amaniensis. During this period, many exotic trees and crops were introduced to Amani by Germans, who were interested in economic development, especially the export of agricultural goods to Germany. His original collections were deposited at Berlin but destroyed (1943) in a bombing during World War II.
