Etymology of Wedelia:
For Georg Wolfgang Wedel (1645–1731), German physician and botanist. He qualified as a doctor at the University of Jena (1669), served as a district physician until 1672, and then was appointed professor of anatomy, surgery and botany at the University of Jena (1673), a position he held until 1719. During this period, he was voted rector on 10 occasions. From 1719–1721, he held the chair of theoretical medicine. He was also personal physician to the duke of Weimar (1679) and prince of Saxony (1685). His medical publications leaned heavily in the direction of pharmacological and pharmaceutical chemistry. He was also a defender of both of alchemy and astrology. He translated a new and accurate edition of the Greek Bible into German.
