Short etymology:
For Augusta Vera Duthie (1881–1963), South African botanist and plant collector, born in Knysna, studied at the universities of Cape Town (MA, 1910) and Stellenbosch (DSc,1929). She spent a year at Cambridge (1912) and a year in Australia (1920). She was a lecturer in botany and head of department at Victoria College (later to become Stellenbosch University), and she retired as senior lecturer in 1939. She established the Stellenbosch Herbarium, specialising in the flora of the Stellenbosch district, especially the sand flats, and on retirement collected extensively around Knysna. Eight species were named after her.
