A coffee-table format book, this set of bold watercolours by Joan van Gogh with text by John Anderson. targets the trees and larger shrubs of the southern central Transvaal region of South Africa. Described as "alive and diagnostic", this is a legacy of an area much of which is now under urban sprawl. It is the only South African book to depict stylized "hypothetical sketches" of significant topographical features in which the species occurs. There are some 750 species of woody shrubs or indigenous trees from this area, but only indigenous woody species over 2m in height were illustrated in this book. There are also accompanying habit sketches, brief descriptions and a height scale.
