Bulangula
Started by Dave Martin and Réjane Woodroffe, this is a community run backpackers situated south of Coffee Bay. Situated at the mouth of the Xhora river, it comprises several rondavels, tents, a treehouse, outdoor bath and showers, and rocket showers. A central kitchen also serves as a hang-out area. Open to volunteers they have a number of programmes. See http://bulungula.com/
Floristically it is a combination of grassland and coastal forest with a number of beautiful species surviving the heavy grazing. A massive population of nearly 400 Leucadendrons flourished near the lodge, but a CASABIO survey in Oct 2020 found nearly all of the 400 dead, with only 17 surviving. The cause of the population stress is currently unknown.
