Groenekloof Renosterveld Reserve
Adjacent to the SPCA, Darling, and just to the north of the town.
The Darling Groenkloof Reserve is approximately 14 ha in size and harbours the critically endangered Swartland Granite Renosterveld. It is situated behind the Darling Cemetery and accessed from the parking area off the R315, in front of the SPCA.
Due to the rapidly expanding agriculture and development large tracts of this internationally unique flora is disappearing. With only 21% of Swartland Granite Renosterveld remaining, only 5% of which is conserved, this reserve has the highest remaining fragments at 0.07% and it is their mission to conserve, maintain and rehabilitate its biodiversity.
Taking the footpath to the top end of this reserve, one has a wonderful view over the village as well as north-west across the Swartland in the direction of Piketberg.
Although it bears fewer large shrubs and bushes than the Renosterveld Reserve, it is especially good for the viewing of geophytes.
Wandering back down towards the cemetery corner and the gate, will have given you a scenic walk of between half-an-hour and an hour, depending on your pace.
