To the north of the table-grape growing valley of De Doorns rises the Matroosberg mountains.
Matroos is Afrikaans meaning 'sailor' on account of a rock formation that resembles a sailors hat.
At 2249m it is the second highest mountain in the Western Cape after Seweweekspoort peak (2325m) and the 8th highest in South Africa. The Mountain Club of South Africa have a ski hut on the mountain.
