Including Citrusdal, Clanwilliam and exiting west of Van Rhynsdorp, the Olifants River is a major and heavily cultivated drainage channel to the west coast of South Africa.

Gk. khamira = the name of a monster in Greek mythology. Probably referring to the plant’s prostrate habit, Gk. Chamai = on the ground, low, dwarf.
