Wild Coast
This is the coastal region of the Eastern Cape within the former Transkei. The region stretches from East London in the south to the border of KwaZulu-Natal in the north. It is the traditional home of the Mpondo people, and the birthplace of many prominent South Africans, including Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki.[1]
It is home to the Albany Thicket bioregion in the south, and the Indian Ocean Coastal Belt bioregion in the north. Much of the original vegetation has been modifed or lost to excessive grazing, with forest pockets being lost to harvesting wood for fuel as well as infrastructure. The region is now mostly grass with barely surviving sprigs of indigenous plants. Invasives such as Cestrum and the Swordfern, Nephrolepis exaltata are becoming an increasing problem.
Developmental threats to the region include several mining concessions and the expansion of the N2 Toll Road that has already led to the loss of some critically threatened species and cuts through the Pondoland centre of endemism.
Other popular tourist towns and villages along the Wild Coast include Port St Johns, Coffee Bay, Hole-in-the-Wall, Qolora Mouth, Kei Mouth, Morgan Bay, and Haga Haga.
