Etymology of Acanthopsis:
Gk. -opsis = resembling. Acanthosicyos (Cucurbitaceae) Welw. Ex Hook.f. Gk. akanthos = thorn; sikyos or sykios = wild cucumber; referring to the thorny cucumber or gourd such as the !Nara and the Gemsbok cucumber.
