Gk. Akiniton, the ancient Gk. name used by Theophrastus for a very poisonous plant. Derived possibly from Gk. akon = dart or javelin, the tips of which were poisoned with the plant’s deadly toxin, or akonitos = ‘without struggle’. The plant’s common name ‘wolf’s bane’ refers to the deadly toxins extracted from the plant, which were in the past used to kill wolves ‘without struggle’.
