Adonis, in Greek mythology, was a beautiful youth, son of Cinyrus, king of Cyprus. One version of his death is that when Ares, the god of war, heard that Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and sexual rapture was chasing Adonis to mate with him he became jealous and sought revenge. Aphrodite begged Adonis to give up the dangerous sport of hunting because she could not bear to lose him, knowing that the young man would have a terrible end. Adonis ignored her advice and was killed by Ares disguised as a wild boar. Aphrodite heard his cries and went to him and he died in her arms. Upon his death she turned the blood drops that fell from his wounds onto the soil into windflowers (the short-lived anemone) as a memorial to their love. The petals of these flowers are blood-red.
