Gk. agathos = good; osmē = smell, odour; referring to fragrant oils in the glands of the leaves.
Etymology of marifolia:
From the Latin ‘mari’ / ‘mare’ meaning ‘sea’; and the Latin ‘folia’ / ‘folium’ meaning ‘leaf’; probably referring to the similarity of the leaves to Teucrium marum (cat's thyme)
