Etymology of Ailanthus:
Moluccan (Indonesian) name ailanto = sky tree or ‘tree of the gods’ or ‘tree of heaven’; alluding, perhaps, to its resistance to pollution, freedom from insects and disease, and ability to grow in almost any soil (unfortunately, it is also an invasive).
Etymology of altissima:
From the Latim 'altissimus' meaning high; referring to the height of the plant.
