For Albertus Magnus (Albert of Bollstädt and other names) (c 1200–1280), German scholar, philosopher and author. He became a Dominican in 1223 and taught in various priories before being sent to the University of Paris (c 1241). He received his doctorate in Theology (1245). From 1260–1262 he was Bishop of Regensburg. He paraphrased all of the known works of Aristotle and pseudo-Aristotle (17 volumes), wrote a botanical work De vegetabilus et plantis (seven volumes), and wrote on astronomy, chemistry, embryology, geography, mineralogy, music, physiology, palaeontology and zoology, etc. He was the first person to produce arsenic in a free form, recognised that the Milky Way was composed of stars, and experimented with photosensitive chemicals like silver nitrate.
