Etymology of Alchemilla:
Arabic al-khimia = alchemy. Alchemists in the Middle Ages attributed miraculous properties to water exuded by these plants by the process of guttation (the exudation of water from leaves as a result of root pressure).

From the Latin palmatus with the leaves lobed resembling a hand
