Short etymology:
For Stanesby Alchorne (1727–1800), English botanist, a collector of British plants. From 1771–1772 he was praefectus horti (= head gardener) at the Chelsea Physic Garden, the second oldest botanical garden in England. The word ‘Physic’ here relates to the science of healing as this garden was originally established (1673) as an apothecaries’ garden, i.e. for medicinal plants. Later he became assay master at the Royal Mint and amassed an important library of early printed books.
