Gk. aloē (from earlier Semitic word alloeh) = bitter. The liquid or dried juice found in the leaves is bitter.

Acaulescent or short-stemmed succulent. Leaves grey-green, broadly deltoid, spreading, unarmed. Flowers in capitate, rounded panicles, nodding, inflated below, coral with pink tips. Aug.--Sept. Rocky slopes, NW, KM, SE (Worcester Karoo to Port Elizabeth and E Karoo).
