Short etymology:
For Bento Antonio Alves, possibly a horticulturalist at the Portuguese Royal Botanical Garden, which was managed by Friedrich Martin Joseph Welwitsch, director of the garden. Welwitsch did botanical exploration in the Canary Islands and Madeira, possibly with Alves, who became a friend and companion of the Austrian botanist. From 1853–1861 they botanised in Angola, then a Portuguese colony, during which they discovered Welwitschia mirabilis. Welwitsch named the genus Alvesia after Alves in 1869.
