Etymology of Amoebophyllum:
Gk. amoib- = to change; phyllon = a leaf; referring to the leaves being alternate (unusual among mesembs).
Etymology of rangei:
Commemorating Paul Range (1879-1952), a government geologist and amateur botanist in the former SWA (Namibia). He collected extensively but particularly in southern Namibia
