Short etymology:
For John Amson, (1698–1763) American physician, mayor of Williamsburg, Virginia from 1750–1751, and an associate of the famous botanist John Clayton. The genus is most often said to have been named for an 18th-century Virginia physician and traveller, Charles Amson, but research in 2004 by James Pringle, who traced the history of the first collected species of the genus and the variety of the names given to the plant, clearly establishes that Charles probably never existed. Very little is known about John Amson.
