Etymology of Anagallis:
Gk. ana = again; agallein = to delight in or anagelis, anagalao = to laugh. Possibly because these flowers open whenever the sun strikes them or alluding to its herbalmedicinal value said to alleviate depression and many other conditions. Common name ‘pimpernel’.

Diffuse, branching annual to 20 cm. Leaves sessile, ovate. Flowers solitary in the axils, often glandular-ciliate, blue or scarlet. July--Feb. Disturbed sites, NW, SW, KM, LB, SE (cosmopolitan weed).
