Etymology of Aptosimum:
Gk. Aptosimum = not falling (a- = not; ptosis = fall); referring to the capsules which remain attached to the stems long after the seeds have been shed (William John Burchell, 1822).
Etymology of spinescens:
From the Latin spina = 'spine', 'thorn', 'prick' or 'prickle' and -escens = 'becoming like'; i.e. the thorns are incompletely formed
