Etymology of Araujia:
For Antonio de Araujo de Azevedo, count of Barca (1754–1817), Portuguese diplomat and politician, and patron of botany. He served under John VI (1767–1826) in Portugal and Brazil (1807) as minister plenipotentiary at the Hague in 1787 and St Petersburg, minister of Foreign Affairs and War (1804), of the Interior (1806 and 1814), of the Navy (1815), and president of the Royal Board of Trade and as chairman of the Royal Treasury. He taught the Brazilians how to manufacture porcelain, had his own splendid botanical garden, introduced a Chinese colony to cultivate tea in Brazil (1812) and tried to establish a royal school of sciences, arts and crafts. On his death, his archive of 7 000 documents on different topics was integrated into the Royal Library. Araulia is the Brazilian name for this plant.
