Named after Anna Amelia Obermeyer (later Mrs Mauve) (1907–2001) a botanist and curator of the Transvaal Museum Herbarium, during which time she published revisions of Barleria, Petalidium and Blepharis. In 1957 she joined the staff of the Botanical Research Institute, specialising in the petaloid monocots, aquatic plants and other groups. After her retirement in 1972 she continued working in the National Herbarium until 1985, her many contributions being published mainly in Bothalia. After the death of Dr G.J. Lewis, she completed the revision of the S. African species of Gladiolus that was published under joint authorship. She collected some 4500 specimens.
She was educated at the Transvaal University College (1926– 29), graduating M.Sc. From 1929 until her marriage in 1938 to Anton Mauve, a civil engineer.
